Fellowship Overview

The New World Symphony curriculum is organized around three core areas:

     - Performance and Musicianship

     - Community and Audience Engagement

     - Leadership and Entrepreneurship

Elements of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, technology, and wellness are integrated

throughout these areas. Each season includes visiting faculty, coaches, guest artists, workshops, and

professional development opportunities connected to these core areas.

NWS Fellows participate in a full season of orchestral, chamber, solo, and professional development

activities. The program emphasizes preparation, artistic flexibility, collaboration, and the skills needed

to succeed in the professional orchestral field.

With the exception of the Conducting Fellowship, invitations to join NWS are extended on a

season-by-season basis for up to three seasons, at the sole discretion of NWS. Participation in the

program is subject to ongoing review by designated members of the Musician Advancement

department.

Fellows participate in a broad range of Community Engagement programs, including instruction in

Miami-Dade public schools, interactive chamber music presentations, online mentorship and coaching,

and collaborative student ensembles.

These programs help Fellows strengthen communication, teaching, public speaking, and

community-centered musicianship while serving South Florida and audiences beyond Miami Beach.

Standing for Build, Learn, Understand and Experiment, NWS’s BLUE program is a combination of leadership and entrepreneurship training and hands-on project development. The program provides NWS Fellows and alumni with a comprehensive skill set to complement their musical training, while exploring passion projects and creating meaningful connections with audiences and the community.

At NWS, wellness is integral to artistic excellence. Fellows engage in a proactive, evidence-informed

wellness curriculum that supports performance, career sustainability, and whole-person health.

• Performance psychology coaching focused on confidence, focus, and audition preparation

• Alexander Technique and musician-specific injury prevention resources

• Bodywork and movement practices such as yoga, breathwork, and mobility

• Workshops and residencies focused on artistry, resilience, and sustainable careers

• Practical tools and referrals for managing stress and navigating high-pressure performance environments

The goal is to build a culture where health, learning, and artistry reinforce one another.

Each NWS fellowship includes stipend, housing, a travel grant, instrument insurance, instrument loan

access, and a time-off policy that recognizes professional development needs.

• Stipend: Fellows receive a living allowance while NWS is in session. The current stipend amount should be updated annually before publication.

• Housing: NWS provides furnished housing for Fellows in Miami Beach.

• Travel Grant: New Fellows receive a one-time travel grant to assist with relocation expenses.

• Instrument Insurance: NWS covers the cost of insurance for each Fellow's primary instrument. Fellows may purchase additional coverage for other instruments or bows.

• Instrument Loans: NWS has a limited pool of funds available for low-interest loans to support the purchase of new instruments.

• Time Off: Fellows are expected to be available whenever NWS is in session unless time off has been requested and approved.

• Instrumental Fellowships: Available for orchestral instruments, including piano. Most instrumental fellowship applications follow a shared application process, with instrument-specific repertoire and requirements.

• Piano Fellowship: Piano Fellows participate in orchestral, chamber, collaborative, and solo playing opportunities and work with visiting soloists and instrumentalists.

• Conducting Fellowship: A one-year fellowship for a qualified conductor who has completed at least a bachelor's degree and is not currently enrolled in a degree program.

• Audio/Video Fellowship: Hands-on experience in audio, video, production, and media work connected to NWS programming.

• Library Fellowship: Professional training in orchestral library work with NWS staff, conductors, guest artists, and Fellows.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree by the start of the fellowship. Applicants currently enrolled in a degree program must complete that program before beginning a fellowship. Applicants who are not yet eligible for a fellowship may still apply for the substitute list if they meet the substitute list requirements.

Because Fellows may depart before completing three years, openings vary by season. NWS auditions for most instruments annually, with possible exceptions for timpani and percussion. Fellowship invitations are extended on a rolling basis following auditions and confirmation of vacancies.
