Substitute List

Currently, New World Symphony has no opening for an Audio and Video Fellow. Applicants may add their name to the contact list by emailing us and will be notified when this fellowship becomes available.

NWS offers musicians the opportunity to apply for placement on the substitute list only, without being actively considered for a fellowship.

  • Substitute list applications are submitted through the NWS Acceptd application portal.

  • The application site is currently open and will remain open until July 31, 2026.

  • There is a $35 administrative fee to cover the cost of processing the application.

  • Applicants should prepare the Video Round / Prescreening repertoire listed for their instrument. This is a recorded round only. There is no second round for substitute list applications.

  • Some instruments have exceptions to these requirements, and specific details can be found on Acceptd.

  • Saxophone, euphonium, and guitar players are also invited to apply.

  • Results and additional details about the substitute list will be emailed after submission as soon as possible.

  • If invited to join the NWS substitute list, a musician's status will remain in effect for 12 months from the date the result is emailed.

  • NWS limits the number of musicians in the substitute pool.

  • Members of the substitute pool may be called to augment the orchestra for larger works or to replace NWS musicians taking time off.

  • When NWS engages a substitute, NWS provides air transportation, housing if needed, and a stipend.

  • If NWS requests to engage a substitute, it is the musician's responsibility to ensure their schedule is clear and, if they are still in school, that their time away has been approved.

Video Guidelines

  • Your prescreening video should be no longer than 10–12 minutes. If you need to shorten your recording, you may stop your solo passage sooner.

  • Record your required solo and excerpts unaccompanied in one continuous take. Do not pause, edit or splice together multiple recordings.

  • Use a single camera angle that shows your full body for the entire performance.

  • Choose a quiet space and position your microphone to avoid distortion. When in doubt, prioritize audio clarity over video quality.

  • Watch your recording from start to finish before submitting to ensure it meets these criteria.

  • If your video appears edited, your audition may be disqualified.
