Peter Ecklund

Peter Ecklund is a first-year Bassoon Fellow at the New World Symphony. Prior to joining NWS, he was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and served as Second Bassoon of the Detroit Opera Orchestra. 

Originally from Haslett, Michigan, Peter began playing organ at age six and took up the bassoon at age 11. He spent two formative summers at Interlochen Arts Camp before studying with Jeffrey Lyman at the University of Michigan, where his studies were generously supported by Penny and Roe Stamps. He also holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with George Sakakeeny and Kim Laskowski. 

Peter has performed with orchestras across the United States, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Guest Principal), Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Palm Beach Symphony and Florida Grand Opera, among others. 

Peter has held fellowships at leading music festivals including the Sarasota Music Festival, Chautauqua Institution, Aspen Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center. In the summer of 2025, Peter was among 45 Tanglewood Music Center Fellows selected to travel to Leipzig, Germany, to perform in the Shostakovich Festival Leipzig. The Festival Orchestra presented performances of the complete works of Dmitri Shostakovich alongside the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhaus Orchestra. 

In addition to making reeds and enjoying the Miami Beach weather, Peter enjoys chasing the perfect cup of espresso.
